Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing
EMDR or Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing is a therapeutic technique originally developed by Francine Sharpiro in order to help people find relief from the emotional distress they feel related to traumatic and/or upsetting life experiences. EMDR uses bilateral stimulation while asking clients to recall certain memories in order to have these memories “reprocessed” so that the client no longer has the same emotional distress he or she once felt. Once EMDR is successfully completed the individual can still remember the experience, but no longer has painful emotions related to the experience. Just as the body can heal from an injury, EMDR helps the brain heal from past mental wounds. If you are interested in learning more about EMDR please visit www.emdria.org.
